Lake Superior State University's Office of International Education has put together two opportunities for students and members of the community to study and visit China early this summer.

LSSU students are invited to participate in a four-week, six-credit program being offered May 14-June 13. The community is welcome to go along on a two-week trip from June 4-17.

The LSSU China Study Abroad Program will allow participating students to experience Chinese culture by living in Shanghai, the financial and commercial center of the country, and studying at Shanghai University. The program features two three-credit courses, A Survey of Chinese Culture, which fulfills three hours of the general education requirement for Humanities, and Chinese Cultural Diversity, which fulfills three hours of general education requirement for Cultural Diversity.

"Students from any discipline are welcome," said Prof. Guidi Yang of LSSU's Office of International Education. "No Chinese language ability is required."

Students will be traveling with and led by LSSU faculty, and will visit historical sites and take cultural field trips during their stay. They may apply for LSSU financial aid toward trip expenses if they are eligible.

The community trip will take participants to Shanghai and Beijing and two well-known scenic areas, Suzhou and Hangzhou.

"People in Suzhou and Hangzhou say, 'Above is paradise in heaven; below are Suzhou and Hangzhou,'" said Yang.

Students will be able to tack on a four-day optional trip to Beijing, June 13-16, if they wish. The trip will include visits to the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, Beijing Opera and more.

Confirmation and deposits must be made to the International Education Office by March 22, Yang said. Total payment for both trips is due by April 13. Yang encouraged anyone interested in the trips to respond quickly, because it will take six to eight weeks for a U.S. passport to be processed, and one to two weeks to get a visa from the Chinese Consulate General in Chicago.
