On Saturday October 28, The 12th annual Great Lake State Weekend took place on October 27-28, 2006. With a variety of family fun events, GLSW is a celebration of alumni, current students and their families and friends. Kicking the weekend off on Friday was the Alumni Association Awards and Alpha Chi Honors Society Induction. Guests were also invited to cheer on Laker Volleyball as they competed against Saginaw Valley State University in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. After the volleyball game, a Laker Hockey game against American International University (AIU) began at 7:35pm in Taffy Abel Arena. This was the first time that Lake State played AIU.

Saturday the 28th was anything but ordinary. With GLSW continuing, prospective students and families were also on campus attending the annual Fall Fling. This year there were about 650 people taking part in the variety of sessions and events. The students and families were able to learn what Lake State has to offer as well as get answers to any questions that they might have had. After all of the sessions were complete, Fall Fling participants were able to join in on some of the GLSW events. In the Bud Cooper Gymnasium, an information fair was available where prospective students could learn about student organizations and services available and have fun with a bungee run and fighting knights.

Starting at 10am on Saturday, a 5k fun run took place in which about 20 people of various ages participated. Other events for the day included planetarium shows, the Kemp Mineral Open House, a brunch for parents of current students, Kids Kollege, Camp Seamore, and the presentation of Mansfield Parents of the Year Award.

At 4pm, Lake State Cheerleaders hosted a pep rally in which they showed off their moves to the fight song and pumped up the crowd for the hockey game starting at 5:05pm. The hockey team swept AIU over the weekend including a 5-0 shutout on Friday. After the hockey game, SAILS hosted a costume contest on the ice, in which three different age groups were judged. To wrap-up the big shindig, Lake State Open Late was presented in the Norris Center, there was an open skate with the hockey team, a movie in the gym, games, and more, provided for all ages.
