Presidents Council met for the first time this year on Monday, September 18. Presidents Council is exactly what it sounds like; a council of the leaders of all the recognized student organizations on campus. The organizations include academic and professional clubs, student organizations and the Greek organizations. Presidents Council serves as a way for these groups to collaborate for larger events, to request funding for projects and trips, and to serve in a leadership role for on-campus events and activities.

The meeting opened with Holly Johnson introducing Roberta Payne as the organizations new advisor. Payne is taking over because Johnson is leaving the university in October. Payne spoke briefly about herself, including that she graduated from GVSU in May and was hired by Lake State as the Freshman Residential Life Coordinator. The first order of business for the meeting was to elect a Student Chair. Alex Strobehn was nominated and elected without opposition. Strobehn is president of the Chess Club, served as a Student Government representative last year and would like to help out any way I can. He also promises that Presidents Council will be better than last year. The majority of the meeting was spent filling other chair and committee positions, including electing Phil Hastings to the Standards Board Chair and Mollie Hogg to the Finance Committee Chair.

Susan Fitzpatrick and Brittany Farrell spoke to the members of Presidents Council about the upcoming Great Lake State Weekend (GLSW), trying to get more student groups involved. Group involvement is especially important this year as GLSW has teamed up with Admissions Fall Fling, bringing prospective students to campus at the same time as the parent and alumni visit. There will not be a club fair as there has been in the past, any groups wishing to speak to the high school students should take part in GLSW. For a complete listing of GLSW events, go to www.lssu.edu/glsw.

The next Presidents Council meeting will be October 2nd, at 9pm.
