Dr. Benjamin Clausen visited Sault Sainte Marie to deliver a speech about the conflict and compatibility between science and religion at the Cisler Center. His speech was given in two parts, one on October 13, and the second on the following day.

Dr. Clausen hails from the Geoscience Research Institute at Loma Linda University in southern California where he pursues many different fields in scientific study. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado and has researched, amongst other things, nuclear physics.

He is currently involved in a project in the Marquette area studying a layer of

stromatolites deep within layers of sand and rock below ground level. He is involved in the project because of an interest in scientific dating methods.

His speech about science and religion revolved around two main points. He provided many examples in which science and religion were compatible and many in which they were conflicting.

The audience received information about past scientists who based their research and theories on information presented in the Bible. Most of the scientists who based their research on the Bible were pre-1900. He also talked about modern scientists who were Christians. He explained that although these researches believed in a god, they still believed that the pursuit of scientific knowledge was worthwhile.

He also pointed out the many conflicts between religion and science. In the more modern era, there has been much more conflict between the two than in past times. He had many examples for such conflict between various important figures throughout the past.

At the end of his presentation he summed up his speech. My conclusion isnt to give a bunch of answers, he said. Both religion and science are the search for truth. He told the audience that religion is the search for why the world works and science is the search for how.
