At the Tanglewood Marsh Golf Course on Monday, October 9, the LSSU Laker Hockey Team and United Way hosted the annual Spaghetti Benefit Dinner which was sponsored by Ang-Gios and Tanglewood Marsh Golf Course. The Lakers were assisted by the Soo Indians AAA hockey team members Garrett Thompson, Dan Radtke and Eric McLintock. The Soo Indians hosted the dinner for five years before the Lakers took over two years ago. This year, the two teams worked together and did a wonderful job and also had a great time. Scott and Karen Schackleton are the co-chairs for the United Way Campaign this year and Spencer and Angela Nebel will become the chairs of the campaign next year. Scott said We are focused on one thing and believe in what we do. Dinner was served sit down style with the players serving dinner and refreshments. Approximately 165-170 people were served including the carry-out service. When guests arrived they were able to fill out tickets to be entered into drawings for great prizes. The prizes included an autographed hockey stick, a Nike duffle bag, an LSSU jacket, as well as hats and shirts. The United Way held a 50/50 raffle and sold tickets for $1 and many people said If I win, put it all back towards the United Way. The Lakers and Soo Indians did a great job of getting everyone seated and served. After dinner, the players cleared dishes and passed out homemade baked goods made by the LSSU Athletic Staff and the United Way. When Coach Jim Roque was asked What is the best aspect of this dinner for you? he replied, It is another way for the guys to develop a relationship with the fans and the community. Players were also asked the same question and Jason Blain and Ryan Baird agreed saying being able to contribute to the United Way and meeting people. Josh Sim responded being able to give back to the fans, the community, meeting people and helping the United Way.
