Tenacious D is the greatest rock band in the world, which they let everyone know without hesitation. With one platinum selling album under these overweight rockers belts, a new one has been brought from the depths of hell to rock your socks off. Jack Black and Kyle Gass met in the mid-eighties and played their first gig in 1994 at Als Bar, paying homage to the greatest song in the world, Tribute. While the song does not contain the greatest song in the world, it is because they forgot it after conquering the Devil with it. Tenacious D mixes rock with styles like folk metal, comedy rock, and stoner rock. After the first album was released both band members went their separate ways. Jack Black became the much loved teacher in School of Rock as well as appearing in King Kong and Nacho Libre. Kyle Gass went to his solo project Trainwreck. These were just tactics used to make it seem like there would never be a great rock album by Tenacious D ever again in the history of man. Not the case in the least, because both worked on the new album together in secret. The songs are on average two minutes long. Thirty four minutes of pure musical geniuses with fifteen songs.

Kickapoo is the first song and tells of young Jack Black setting out on a quest to Hollywood at the advice of James Dio after his father, Meatloaf, tells him Rock and Roll is the Devil. Classico is a tribute to Kyle Gass never letting the classical style of music hide. It is still able to show comedic singing. Baby is basically Jack Black whining because he is lonely and is a big baby. They also sing about the deep situation they are in with not being able to pay the rent in Destiny.

While the album is more of an album made for a soundtrack, some songs can stand alone. History tells how Tenacious D rose to power of the greatest rock band ever but still talks about burritos and chicken supremes. Master Exploder is Jack Black vocalizing loudly with no meaning. While listening to Papagenu is quite hilarious, seeing this scene makes it even more so: Jack Black finds Sasquatch in a field of mushrooms and they ride in a strawberry river. This all happens after Jack ate too many magical mushrooms. There is a separation between Jack and Kyle and of course Jack has a solo expressing his feelings for Kyle in Dude I Totally Miss You. While breaking into the Rock History Museum to get the Pick of Destiny, Jacks sings us his walkthrough while executing his break-in plan. After seeing the Pick of Destiny that guitarists such as Eddie Van Halen used, Tenacious D is going to play their open mic session hoping the Pick will make them some money to pay the rent. However, the Devil appears from the depths of Hell and challenges them to a rock off. The Devil begins and definitely rocks way better than anything ever dreamt of by mere mortals. Like the song Tribute, Jack and Kyle make a rock song about beating the Devil during this rock off but it does not contain the actual song. The Devil somehow gets brought back to Hell and the Pick of Destiny is no more. The POD is a tribute to the pick and its greatness.

The ending song is The Metal, about how metal music is so strong that nothing can destroy it, not even grunge. The album is quite an experience but it makes more sense to see the movie and see why most of the songs were written. It has already made the Top 10 on the Billboard charts.
