Registration Survival Guide

Registering for classes can be a confusing muddle. Following this simple step-by-step guide will go a long way to getting you though the process painlessly.

Step 1: Find out which classes you need.

Finding out which classes you need to take before you can graduate is as easy as looking in your copy of the Course Catalog. The catalog lists all of the courses required for each major, as well as providing sample schedules and descriptions of the courses including prerequisites and credit value. As you complete courses, write them down or cross them out in your catalog so you know which classes youve already taken. That way, you can easily find which classes you need to take next. Remember, all students need to take General Education classes, so be sure you take them. General Education requirements are listed toward the front of the course catalog and are normally included in sample schedules.

Step 2: Put together a prospective schedule.

In order to put together a prospective schedule for next semester, you will need to find out which courses you need are being offered. A few weeks before registration, information on who is teaching each class and when it will be taught is available on the LSSU portal. You can access the portal at my.lssu.edu with the username and password you were given when you became a student (its usually your first initial, possibly your middle initial, and your last name). After youve logged in, you can click the Course Schedule Offerings link on the right. Select the term you are looking for from the drop-down menu and press the submit button.

On the next page, you can select which classes you want to see by filling in the various parts of the form and clicking the Class Search button at the bottom of the page. Each class listing will include the name of the professor teaching it, meeting times, and the course number. The 5 digit number next to the class name is what you will use to register for this class online, so make note of it.

As you find courses you want to take, fill out a weekly schedule which includes the course name/number and when the course meets. This makes it easy to see scheduling conflicts, and gives you a handy sheet of paper to carry with you when you talk to your advisor.

Step 3: See your advisor and get your hold removed.

Before you can register for classes, you will need to have the hold on your account removed by your advisor. Bring the weekly schedule you made in Step Two to your advisor, and have then check it over. If everything is OK, your advisor will be able to remove the hold on your account, allowing you to register for classes.

Step 4: Register for classes online.

Remember that 5 digit number next to the course name you wrote down in Step 2? You will need that number in order to register for classes. If you dont remember how to get the number, see step 2 above.

Log into my.lssu.edu and click on Anchor Access on the right. Choose Student and Financial Aid and then Registration. There are many useful links on this page. Here you can add or drop classes, check your schedule, see your registration status and some other handy things.

Select the term for which you want to register and then click Add or Drop Classes. This will bring you to another page where you can put in those 5 digit numbers and press the appropriate button. If all is well, youve just added those classes to your schedule! (If not, its time for a visit to the Registrars Office.)
