College is likely to offer new, and sometimes unexpected, opportunities, demands and challenges. No matter what, this is a time of great change and adjustment. Whether you're going to college for the first time or returning to school, the experience can be both exhilarating and daunting. Here are some things to think about.

Time Management

It is important to establish priorities early on. Be realistic about the amount of time it takes to balance school, work, your social life and other responsibilities.

Study Skills

Living with Roommates

It is unrealistic to expect that roommates will be best friends. Roommates may work out mutually satisfying living arrangements, but the reality is that each may tend to have his or her own circle of friends.

Personal Responsibility

College classes are more difficult than high school classes and responsibility for success is on the student. It is the students responsibility to know what is required of them. Dont hesitate to ask for direction and clarification.

Increased Freedom

Party smart! If you choose to drink alcohol and enjoy partying, do it in ways that dont result in harm to yourself or others, and doesnt result in poor academic performance. Do everything in moderation.

Learning to Communicate

Communicate effectively. Be assertive with others so that your own needs are met, but do this in ways that respect others and their differences.

Budgeting Money

Taking responsibility for your money is just as important as being academically responsible.

Stress Management

Expect some stress. Some stress is normal and healthy but sometimes it can be overwhelming. Develop healthy coping skills and use campus support services when needed.

Problem Solving

You will have choices to make make them wisely. Know the advantages and disadvantages of each possible solution. Learn to talk it out with friends, family, residential advisors or counselors.
