I am pleased to introduce myself, Hilary Kozma, as this years president of Student Government. This is my third year on this body, serving formerly as a representative and Secretary of Student and Concerns. I am happy to be back at Lake Superior State University with many familiar faces and many new ones. We all have our reasons for coming to Lake State and whether it be the size, degree options, environment, or the people, we all want Lake State to be the place where we can have the most fulfilling undergraduate education. Its Student Governments goal to make that happen. We are your campus representatives elected to be your voice to the university and to make this university a place that we continue to attend and that we can encourage others to attend.

Student Government is more than a governing body with meetings. We have four operating committees that each focus on a specific area of your campus life. Student Services and Concerns is a committee that is formed to specifically address all concerns that students have with the campus. This committee is trained to deal with everything from problems with maintenance on individual buildings to problems affecting enrollment. Bring any concern that you have to Student Government. There is an online concerns form, as well as a concerns e-mail at concerns@lssu.edu that all serve to get your concerns addressed. Political Action and University Development is the area of Student Government that works with the President to get our voices heard in Lansing to increase higher education funding, as well as facilitating many other university activities. Activities and Public Relations is our face. They work to get activities such as Searchmont and Snowman Burning functioning, and this year they will be active in getting Student Government out to the campus to hear your voices and keep you informed. Discretionary Funding is a committee that is tasked with allocating the Student Activity and Media Fee between the other six branches of the Student Assembly (Inter-Greek Council, Judiciary Board, Presidents Council, Activities Board, Compass, and WLSO).

I and the other members of the executive board of Student Government are excited about the coming year, and I would like to encourage you to stay involved. Petitions have been available for the past week for the twelve representative spots available for the coming year. Next week will be an informational forum where you will be able to meet the candidates. The last week in September will be the voting for the representatives. VOTE!! If nothing else, it will give you the opportunity to participate without taking more than five minutes of your time. In the coming year, keep your eyes open for your Student Government representatives, meeting times, and activities. We are here for you, and with your help we will work to make this university the best it can be for each student. Good Luck!
