On Thursday, October 5th, the LSSU Womens Volleyball team took on Ashland University.

At the Bud Cooper Gymnasium located in the Norris Center, these two teams faced off in an intense competition for the position of victor, which is determined by winning three out of five games. The Lakers jumped for the lead by winning the first game with a score of 30-26, however Ashland came back from behind winning the second game with 30-13 and the third game with 30-24. Securing a win for the night, Ashland proceeded to beat the Lakers in the final round with a score of 30-20.

The Ashland Eagles (13-6 overall, 7-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) made a total of 74 kills, successful hits against the opposing side, with Mary Kate Glowe leading the team with 21 kills followed by Marina Santos with 20, Beth Dangel with 15, and Britney Jurchenko with 10 kills. Lynsey Warren led her team with the most blocks (4).

The Lakers (5-15 overall, 2-9 GLIAC) obtained a total of 36 kills. Ashley Wyers had the most with 10 kills, Ali Jones and Brishia Stroven scored 9 kills each, Erin McLain and Jamie Groos both scored 3, and Sara Hess added with 2. Jessica Ewers set a team-high of 23 digs in a game, and Erin McLain and Ali Jones followed up with 10 digs of their own.

When asked his feelings of the game, Head Coach Mark Engle said, I thought we got off to a good start. The teams looked pretty even, but Ashland has a strong defense which is a credit to them. Our problem was having too many unforced errors or mistakes. Most of our players are young, without any seniors and only two juniors on the team. However, the team is still showing of improvement, so Im feeling good about this year yet.
