Are you ready for this November Election?
It will affect you so make your opinion count by voting.
By Jason Oberle, Political Science major

First things first, are you registered to vote? If not, you can stop at the Office of Terri-Lynn Land, Secretary of State and register. If you are registered but not locally, you must request an absentee ballot from the clerk in your township, village or city. I believe as a young men or women and college students we must take the time to make our voices heard by voting.

This November 7th may be one of the most important elections in Michigan history. With 5 state-wide ballot proposals on the ballot along with the gubernatorial race, all Senate and House seats, the Michigan Supreme Court, Regents and Trustees to state universities, Attorney General and Secretary of State races also including local ballot questions, the November 7, 2006 ballot will be large. Referred to in many circles as a bed sheet ballot because of its size, I think this ballot could cover a King size bed.

You may be asking yourself, does my vote count? Well you better believe it; consider the Attorney General Race four years ago was decided by less than 6000 votes, state-wide. This means to us here at Lake Superior State University, we potentially represent more than one half or more of the deciding votes of any state-wide race. Do you see the importance of voting now? Can you see how it will count?

I can not begin to explain how important voting is at all levels of government. Whether or not it is local, state or federal government, your vote and mine counts and it is extremely important. How you vote on November 7 will affect the economy and your ability to find a job in Michigan when you graduate. It will affect your children and the opportunities which they will receive as they grow and learn. It will affect the police, ambulance and fire services provided to you and your parents. It will affect your ability to utilize the outdoors of Michigan for hunting, fishing, and camping, hiking or operating your off road vehicle. It will affect you!

I plead with the student body of Lake Superior State University to plan to vote on November 7, 2006. If you are a conservative like me or a liberal like Howard Dean it makes no difference. The only thing that will make a difference in 2006 will be your visit to the polls and your votes. Get involved and vote, after all it is your future.
