Basketball Returns
Kenneth Casperson

As the month of October flies by, many students are just relaxing after a series of midterm exams (or from studying for ones that come on Monday), but another group of people are just getting started. After months of preseason conditioning (As Coach Fitzner reiterated it never really stops), regular season practice for the LSSU Mens and Womens Basketball teams started last Sunday the 15th.
The Womens Basketball team is under new leadership with former assistant coach Jamie Pewinski stepping into the position and newcomer to LSSU, Tethnie Forbes as Assistant Coach. The Lady Lakers square off for their first exhibition game at Notre Dame on October 31st.
Were hoping to be as successful as we have been in past years, said Coach Pewinski. We only lost one player from our team last year, our starting center, and we have three incoming freshmen, who we look forward to having help us, getting some time in, but we have a strong returning core of players this year.
The Mens Basketball team will be coached this year by returning Head Coach Mike Fitzner and new Assistant Coach Troy Forbes. Following their first practice this Sunday, the mens team has their first exhibition game against Laurenchen University in Sudberry on the 3rd of November, and then their first regular season game in a tournament against Lewis in Houghton. The mens team has 8 players returning from last year, and as the coach put it: We were a very young team last year; its going to be good to go into this next season with a year under our belts. We still have a lot of young kids, but now they have some experience, have gotten stronger.
Both coaches are confident in their teams, and have high expectations for the upcoming season. Even though there are still weeks to go before the regular season begins in earnest, both teams will be in the gym and on the court, training hard for the season that awaits them.
