Facebook, No More

Students at Lake Superior State University were banned from using Facebook and My Space. The President and Board of Trustees made the announcement late last week for their plans to improve LSSU. The head of the University consulted Student Life and IT to discuss what could be changed to improve Student Life, grades, computer problems, and bandwidth. Their solution for many of the above problems and others was to eliminate the popular use of time called Facebook and My Space.
Student Life has seen a decline in students participating in the activities on campus. The decline in attendance was seen across the board from athletics to music, movies, and comedy nights. The heads of Student Life were concerned because of their efforts to bring students in are falling short. They do not know whether it is simply apathy, not enough time, or the increase use of Facebook and My Space.
As many of you know Facebook was new to LSSU last year, even though thousands of other schools have been using it for years. Facebook is a great way to communicate and participate in a social network, where one doesnt exist, said one student. Other students said that they spend hours procrastinating, catching up, and a study aid. The administration sees these online communities as a deterrent from participating in on campus events. The decision to remove Facebook and My Space from LSSU is in conjunction with the new campus policy that every student when not in class must attend all extracurricular events. A representative from Student Life said, We will make the events student friendly and offer more free things as an incentive to come. We are excited about the increases in the future crowds. The athletic department is also happy about the increase in support for their students.
The academic departments on campus are also pleased with this decision. One professor said, My students will finally stop procrastinating and maybe even come to class because they wont be spending all night online. The administration views the newest change to campus life not only a benefit to student life but also to the academics and students studies.
Finally IT is overwhelmed with joy because the bandwidth on campus will increase in speed, now that these online communities are banned. A representative said, Students will find their internet connection moving much faster now and our games will be improved, on a personal note.
While the administration is celebrating in the accomplishment of destroying a new student past time, students are protesting loudly in emails and phone calls. Here is what one student said, Now that I dont have Facebook and My Space, I guess I will be drinking some more. With these kinds of opinions floating around, Public Safety will have a more difficult time enforcing the alcohol policy; the administration had no comment on this.
With the increase of bandwidth enjoy the extra speed, your free time, and all the new options for students on campus.
