LSSU Womens Tennis Carries Perfect Season

The LSSU Womens Tennis Team began their season on a good foot this last weekend, as they beat Wayne State on September 8th and dominated Findlay the following day.  As both games were Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) games, Lake Superior now stands second in 2006 Womens Tennis standings.  With two additional non-conference wins, Michigan Tech is currently first in the standings.  However, Tech is also 2-0 in conference games so far this season.
	Wayne State University and LSSU squared off in the Norris Center last Friday and began with doubles; the first of which Lake States Celina Grondin and Lindsay Adams contended against Amanda Pressotto and Colette Cabot of WSU.  Wayne State took the double 5-8.  The next double with LSSU team Alex Chiakmakis and Megan Lamothe vs. Dee Mays and Meghan Luzod went better for the Lakers, ending closely with 9-8.  The final double pitting Megan Smith and Carolyn Pumford against Wayne States Steph Van Tuyl and Sargam Bhatt fell into place ending 8-4. 
	Following the doubles, single matches were played of which LSSU took 4 out of 6.  The results go as follows (LSSU contenders named first):  Grondin beat Pressotto (6-4, 6-2), Lamothe beat Cabot (3-6, 6-2, 6-2), Adams lost to Mays (1-6, 2-6), Pumford lost to Van Tuyl (3-6, 4-6), Smith beat Luzod (6-2, 7-6) and Chiakmakis finished off Bhatt (6-2, 6-2) in the last game of the day.  The final score was 6-3, with LSSU taking 2 out of 3 doubles and 4 out of 6 singles.
	The next day LSSU took Findlay in straight sets.  The first and closest double was with Celina Grondin and Devin Adams against U of Fs Devin Games and Liz Blosser; the game ended with 8-6.  Alex Chiakmakis and Megan Lamothe beat Lana Pahl and Jenna Lemle 8-2, and Megan Smith and Carolyn Pumford took the last double against Courtney Kahl and Pam Bullock 8-3.  The team did really well on the singles games and won each one as follows:  Grondin beat Games (6-0, 6-1), Lamothe beat Blosser (6-1, 6-0), Adams beat Pahl (6-2, 6-1), Pumford beat Lemle (6-1, 6-2), Smith beat Bullock (6-2, 6-1), and Chiakmakis took the last single against Kahl (6-0, 6-3).  The final score was an excellent 9-0.
	The girls coach, Charles Drury, had this to say about their season so far, It was a tough first week for LSSU; Wayne was tough and it was a match wed been preparing for.  We came out two and oh, and were very happy with that.  The team has done very well so far.  This season the team is mostly Upper Classmen, and it shows that were not very green.  The last two games have added a lot of confidence for upcoming GLIAC games.  However, things arent going to get easier, and were going to have our hands full with the weeks ahead.  But were still happy with the wins so far.
