Lady Lakers Sail Past Findlay
By Christopher Martlew

The lady Lakers cruised to another victory on Wednesday to improve their win streak to five games. Coming into this game, both The Lakers and Findlay were ranked 3rd in their conference division. Throughout the first minutes of the game, it looked as if the lead for each team would never extend past two points. Findlays fast paced offense was beginning to look like trouble for the Lakers, so LSSU switched from a 2-3 zone to a full court press with eight minuets left in the half. We decided we needed to go to a full court press and start trapping a little bit. We caught the other on the back of their heels, and started to get more aggressive, said Coach Pewinski.
On the offense side of the ball the Lakers were attacking the Oilers with every chance possible. Mandi Johnson and Monica Rehmann had a combined 30 of the Lakers 42 points at the half. The Lakers were not only leading in score at half, but in every aspect of the game. LSSU seemed to capitalize off Findlay mistakes and made few themselves. The Lakers out shot the Oilers by 9% inside the arc, and by 15% outside the arc.
As the second half unfolded, Findlay found a groove and went on a six one scoring drive. This minor attempt from Findlay was soon shut down again by an aggressive Laker defense and good looks at the basketball on offense. The rest of the half ran on just as the first had. Findlay found ways to cut into the Laker lead, but never enough to take it back. This was mainly due to their own mistakes with ball handling and the lack of good shots. The lady Lakers held on for the win defeating Findlay 75 to 64. The Lakers were lead by Mandi Johnson with 28 points and Monica Rehmann, hitting 18 game points and knocking down her 1,000 career point in the first half. She is only the second Laker to do so, behind teammate Mandi Johnson. Other contributors include freshman Ronlea Peterson with 8 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals; and Jackie Armstrong and Alyssa Vanderwal, who played well in the paint against Findlays tough center Ashley Westenbarger.
