To the Editor:

I would like to inform the community of last week's action by the
administration of Lake Superior State University. On December 23, 2006, they
saw fit to fire Dr. Eric Gadzinski, a tenured Associate Professor of English
here for the past 11 years. The reasons given were that he had missed
classes and was insubordinate; these accusations are not supportable. In
fact, there is ample evidence that he had been targeted for his
outspokenness.

Over the years, in addition to teaching, Dr. Gadzinski has given his time
and expertise to various University and community groups: the Lake Superior
Elders, Upward Bound, the Native American community, the prison community,
the public school community, among others. He served as Chair of the English
Department, founded Blurb literary magazine and the Shining Waters Writers
Series, published scholarly papers and poetry, gave poetry readings, and
spoke at national and international conferences. His academic career is now
threatened. I urge you to show your support for this devoted and popular
professor by contacting Dr. Betty Youngblood, LSSU President, and asking the
administration to reverse their action. For more information or to extend
your support, contact me at sjames@sault.com.
