Need A Summer Job?

Finding a job for the summer is no easy task, and if you are new to the process it is going to take some time to get use to the summer market. When looking for a job for the summer one should recognize three things; the area, time and oneself. Are you applying at home? If so a great place to look for a short term summer job is your local newspaper. This often yields jobs that are geared towards college students. Depending on the area you live there may be tourist attractions that are looking for short term help, like the Sault Locks for example. They employ students for the summer to help greet tourists and they have a variety of jobs.
Another thing to consider when looking for a summer job is the time. If you apply after school is already over you are not going to have a whole lot of luck nailing a decent job. One should take into account and have an idea of where they want to work and when. So apply early and to every place that you can, you can always turn down a job for a better one but you cant take a job that wasnt applied for.
Think of yourself and where you want to go. If you are a history major perhaps working at Mackinaw Island would be appropriate. An internship like that is a golden star on a resume for a history major. Maybe you are just a freshmen getting your feet wet for the first time in the summer job market. Working fast food is a great way to begin your summer career and earn money. Or maybe youre a student wishing to become a teacher. Upward Bound whose office is located in Brady basement is looking for well-to-do students to help with their academic summer program.
There are many options open to all students, the idea of getting a summer job is to apply early, apply professionally and make the most out of it. If you apply early you will be more likely to be picked for the job and when applying make sure you have an up to date resume and be formal and courteous during the interview. As for making the most out of it, remember it is just a summer job and not your last job, treat it with respect and learn from it. Good performance could lead to rehiring for next year or a good reference on your resume.
