New Hockey Scoreboard
Mary Gilray

On Friday October 13, 2006, I was able to speak with Athletic Director Kris Dunbar, in regards to the new scoreboard in the Taffy Abel Arena. Students who attended the Soo Greyhounds pre-season game or the Blue and White Game couldnt help but notice the new scoreboard. The new scoreboard, ordered last spring, replaced the one which was installed in 1993. Both scoreboards were ordered under the direction of Bill Crawford. The old scoreboard had technical difficulties and was known to break down during games, which in turn made keeping track of what was going on much more difficult. The Physical Plant is also very happy with the acquisition of the new scoreboard. The old scoreboard used conventional light bulbs for the lettering, which would burn out and need to be replaced. The new scoreboard has LED lights that do not have to be changed, meaning there is almost no day-to-day maintenance required. Stacey Swanson explained that a crew came in and took more than six hours to replace the scoreboard, including assembling it on the ice surface.
