Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld announced his resignation on Wednesday, November 8, 2006. Rumsfeld has been with the Presidents Cabinet since the beginning of President Bushs first term. Rumsfeld has led the Pentagons decisions regarding Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi freedom, the latter bringing him criticism from both Democrats and Republicans. After much thought and a Republican defeat in Congress, Rumsfeld felt it was time for a new voice to lead the military.
President Bush had the following to say in regard to Rumsfelds resignation, Don Rumsfeld has been a superb leader during a time of change. Yet he also appreciates the value of bringing in a fresh perspective during a critical period in this war.
Rumsfelds replacement is the current Texas A&M President and former CIA Chief, Robert Gates. Gates served as CIA chief for twenty-six years. Before taking the position, the nomination of Gates must be approved by the Senate.
