Student Apathy

Apathy, as defined by The Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is a lack of emotion or lack of interest. Over the past few years student apathy is becoming more apparent throughout the campus. It use to be, students would hang out outside during the week nights, playing football or frisbee on Brady lawn, taking advantage of activities planned by student organizations and also by supporting all Laker Athletics.
It seems that current students, even the students who have been here four or more years, are beginning to lose their Laker pride. Many different student organizations are planning fun and free events in which students are not attending. The student activity and media fee that every student pays is contributing to these events and if students do not attend or voice what they want to do, its just like lighting your $35 on fire, when you could be taking advantage of the events. Such events that have been done already are BC pizza night, Open Comedy Night in the Galley and Bowling at Dondee Lanes. Dont worry, if youve missed these, there are still many more events being planned. Some complain there is no advertising of these events, but in contrast, events are posted on facebook, on every public posting board, the LSSU website, invitations in your Lake State email, and we advertise events in The Compass every week, and if youre reading this, you should know the events. Things are posted, just open your eyes.
For the Laker Athletics, and not just hockey, we do have do other sports like, tennis, volleyball, basketball, track and field, cross country, and softball, they need student support! We have the potential for great sports teams if only we got the student support. When our hockey team scores a goal, we all need to stand and sing our school song. Now everyone is going to say, we have a school song? The answer is yes. If you look at the back page the words are listed, now there is no excuse for not singing the fight song at sports games! So fellow Lakers, we challenge you, join us in getting rid of apathy at LSSU, lets show the other schools what being a Laker is all about.
