Student Government Report

Sparks flew at last weeks Student government meeting. There were laughs, tears, horrible sounds of battle and the destruction of empires. Samurai warriors fought giant ninja robots. The fate of the planet fell to a handful of random people brought together by fate with mysterious powers that they obtained through some plot device.
Okay, not really. Got your attention though, didnt it?
The largest part of the meeting was actually concerned with the recent(ish) proposal to commission officers to be stationed here on campus that is, have people attached to campus security with the full authority to make arrests, like normal police, as opposed to the noncommissioned security force currently in use. This would eliminate the need to call in the Soo police force, or county or state police should an arrest be required on campus last year, there were 33 calls made to the Soo police to come here and clear up matters or make an arrest. No decision was reached during this meeting; however, it will surely come up again.
Another of the more heated debate topics was the Searchmont ski event that is coming soon to a Searchmont near you. Yeah. The event is estimated to cost $6900, and it was brought up that this is a large expenditure if only 200 people go so those of you that want to see this continue had best get a big group together and head out. It was approved for this year, however, with a large majority vote, despite a few very heated I Yields that came up during the debate.
Also discussed: Facebook will not be used as an official Student Government tool. Voted down.
Also discussed was Michigans massive budget deficit, and the Student President will be headed to a conference held by Michigans public universities to work on preventing budget cuts to our schools later in February.
