THE PUBLIC SAFETY REPORT
January 15 through January 21, 2007

The Public Safety Department reports the following activity:

On January 16 at 2110, the department received a report of damage to the sauna in the mens locker room at the Norris Center. It appeared that a person or persons unknown placed a rubber band onto the rocks, causing the rubber band to melt and create an unpleasant smelling smoke to fill the area. The officers attempted to remove the object but were unable to do so due to the heat of the rocks. The sauna was placed out of order and a clean up request was sent to the Physical Plant.

Also on January 16, the department received a report of a disturbance at the Kenneth J. Shouldice Library. Library staff reported a reoccurring problem with an individual using his cell phone inside the library. The individual reportedly talks very loudly, disturbing those in the library, and has refused to move out into the lobby. Officers spoke with the individual, who is not a student at the University, and advised him that he needed to comply with the requests of the library staff. He was also told that any further disturbances could result in his being banned from the library in the future.

On January 17, the department received a report of a child at the Child Care Center bumping into another child while crawling on the floor. The child received a bump on his head, accompanied by redness and swelling. The child was released to his parents.

January 19th saw two traffic incidents, one in K Lot at 1825 and one in S Lot. Both incidents involved reckless driving by students. The officers in each incident issued verbal warnings to the individuals and reminded them that another violation could result in a suspension of their driving privileges on campus property.

At 1845 on January 20, officers responded to a complainant of two male subjects harassing residents of Osborn Hall in an attempt to get them to go two tracking with them. The subjects were told they could not be harassing the residents in any way. The residents were told to contact the Public Safety Department if the subjects returned.

A student reported the theft of his backpack from the Student Activity Center at the Norris Center on January 20 between 1800 and 1900. The backpack was taken while the student was working out and there was no monitor in the area.

On January 20, officers were on patrol when they observed a snowmobile in C Lot parked on a snow bank without being secured in any fashion. Later that night, the same officers observed a pick up truck parked near the snowmobile and a male subject standing outside of the vehicle. The officers were concerned that someone might have been attempting to steal the snowmobile and tried to make contact with the individual. He, however, appeared to be uninterested in a conversation and left the area before officers could make contact.

The Public Safety Department would like to take this opportunity to remind all snowmobile enthusiasts to register their sleds at the Public Safety Department and to keep them secured on trailers when not in use.

Along with the above complainants, your Public Safety Department also handled the following routine duties: 13 weapons storage requests, 27 room admits, and 4 motorists assists.

Public Safety tip of the week: Remember to secure your belongings at all times, whether they are in your dorm room, your vehicle or a public building.
