THE PUBLIC SAFETY REPORT
FEBRUARY 19 26, 2007

The Lake Superior State University Public Safety Department reports the following activity for the period of February 19 through February 26, 2007:

On Tuesday, February 20th, a resident of Osborn Hall reported her change container missing. The complainant indicated that an on-going spate may have been the reason the jar was taken. The incident is under investigation.

A visit to the Norris Center on Thursday, February 22nd, ended up with the patron losing his wallet from the locker room while he was using the facilities. The unhappy patron did not have a lock on his locker at the time of the theft.

During the hockey game played on Friday, February 23rd, a female fan was struck by a puck that entered the stands. The victims chief complainant, at first, was that of a sore hand. She then stated that she was feeling light headed and nauseous. She also reported having trouble with her hearing and blurry vision. She was transferred into the care of Sault Fire and Rescue personnel on the scene

At the same game, a ten-year-old fan hurt her neck on the back of her seat. She reportedly had leaned back in her seat and sustained a slightly scraped and swollen neck. She was given an ice pack and her parents were contacted. Her father declined any further treatment for the injury.

Visitors to an apartment in the Student Village early Saturday morning arrived with six bottles of an illicit beverage in tow. The visitors, who were not students of the University, were unaware of the dry status of the residence. After explaining the situation, the RA asked the visitors to dispose of the intoxicating refreshments and was met with some resistance, which prompted her to contact the Public Safety Department. The same request from officers of the department met with a different attitude and compliancy with the request that they dispose of the beverage. Officers further advised the guests that any further contact during the night would result in a nights lodging as guests of the county.

Approximately 30 minutes after their first visit, officers were called back to the Student Village on another alcohol violation, this one involving a mix of students and non-students, all of whom had apparently been drinking. Officers on the scene determined that none of those involved had consumed large quantities of the alcohol and they were released with a warning. The bottle of alcohol, however, was confiscated.

A very young fan at the Saturday, February 24th hockey game bumped her head on the seats. The two-year-old was examined on the scene and her mother was given an ice pack to apply to the bump. The mother refused any additional treatment.

Two older fans at the same game were contacted about information officers had received indicating the fans had alcohol with them. One of the subjects admitted to having alcohol in his travel mug. The alcohol was confiscated.

At a little before midnight on Saturday, February 24th, a resident of Osborn Hall complained about the noise coming from a fellow residents room. Officers contacted the occupants of the room and advised those present that they needed to quiet down. The occupants agreed to do so and officers cleared the scene.

While on patrol, officers observed a drinking device known as a beer bong in a vehicle parked in O Lot. When contacted, the resident involved was told she could not take the device into Osborn Hall. She told officers that she had no intention of taking it in and was aware of the rules concerning the device. Officers determined the subjects were not seriously intoxicated and released everyone involved, after warning them against any further disturbances.

Finally, on Sunday, February 25th, a patron of the Norris Center advised officers that someone had taken her shampoo, conditioner, and cosmetics from a locker room in the facility.

Along with the above activities, the Public Safety Department conducted the following routine activities: 2 motorists assists, 19 weapons storage escorts, 8 lost and found property reports, 49 room admits, 3 unfounded alarms, and 3 vehicle accidents. We also assisted maintenance 7 times with various problems on campus.

Public Safety Tip of The Week: Spring is on the horizon. Have fun and enjoy yourself but please, do so sanely and safely.
