THE PUBLIC SAFETY REPORT

FEBRUARY 27  MARCH 20 2007

The Lake Superior State University Public Safety Department reports the following activity for the period of February 27 through March 20, 2007:

On Wednesday, February 28, officers received a report of a roommate dispute that led to one of the roommates being pushed by the other.  Officers spoke with both roommates.  They both admitted that the one roommate had a great deal going on at the moment, which may have led to her loss of temper.  They were separated for the night and the aggressor in the situation stated that she hoped they could resolve their differences after Spring Break.

On Friday, March 2, officers received a complaint of loud music in one of the apartments in Moloney Hall.  Upon arrival, officers could hear loud voices but no music.  Residents of the apartment in question were asked to quiet down, which they agreed to do.

The presence of four local high school students in a campus dorm room drew officers attention on Friday, March 2, 2007.  The youngsters advised officers that they had permission to be in the room from one of the rooms residents.  They also said the resident had even gone so far as to give them his key to the room.  However, the second resident was uncomfortable with them being there; especially since he was not going to be there to keep an eye on his belongs.  Officers retrieved the key from the youngsters and advised them they were not allowed to be in the room unless their friend was present.

The hockey game on Friday, March 2, resulted in two medical assists.  In the first, a 10 year old girl fell while running, resulting in minor injuries to her right knee and elbow.  Ice packs were applied to the injured areas and the lasss father was notified and offered further treatment via Sault Fire.  He turned the opportunity down.  

The second assist was to the young victim of an assault.  The girl involved reported being punched, while being held against a wall.  The victim reported striking her head as a result.  Injuries included a bump on the back of the head and a sore left arm, with elbow pain.  The victim was again treated with an ice pack and her guardian contacted.  The guardian refused additional assistance from Sault Fire.

On Sunday, March 11, a subject came into the Public Safety Department to report a suspicious person digging through the trash while making statements about God.  Officers spoke with the suspect and requested that he leave campus.

An icy sidewalk near the Kenneth J. Shouldice Library resulted in a slip and fall accident during which an employee of the university scrapped her left knee and her hands.  After dealing with the employee, officers contacted the Physical Plant to rectify the slippery sidewalk.

Tuesday, March 13, saw members of the Straights Area Narcotics Enforcement team on campus to serve a warrant on an individual.  A second individual in the residents room also accompanied the resident to the local jail.

On Wednesday, March 14, a student was playing basketball in the Norris Center gym when he landed on the foot of another player, resulting in an injury to his ankle.  Officers provided an ice pack along with the advice to seek further medical assistance if the injury worsened.

A student using the library left his belongings unattended for a brief time while getting copies made at the Career Services Center.  He returned to find his MP3 player missing.  Officers conducted a search of the library but were unable to locate the missing property.

A visitor to the Norris Center reported the theft of her purse from the locker room on Saturday, March 17.  The purse had been left in a backpack on the floor in the locker room. 

At 5:05 a.m. on Sunday, March 25, residents of a Townhouse contacted Chippewa County Central Dispatch for an ambulance.  The victim was highly intoxicated and unresponsive.  He was transported to War Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Adverse weather conditions on March 19 led to two slip and fall accidents, both near the Administration Building.  One victim, an employee of the university, slipped on his way into work, twisting his knee and ankle, and hitting his head.  The other victim, a student, complained of a sore left elbow after his encounter with the icy conditions outside the Administration Building.  Both individuals received treatment at the Public Safety Office.

In addition to the above activities, your Public Safety Department conducted the following routine activities:  2 motorist assists, 56 weapons escorts, 17 lost and found property reports, 97 room admits, and 7 unfounded alarms.  We also policed two motor vehicle accidents and assisted maintenance 4 times with various problems on campus.

Public Safety Tip of the Week:  Please remember that you are not the sole resident of your hall.  You live with others and need to be aware of their rights.  It is against university policy to give anyone the key to your room.  It takes all residents to ensure the safety and security of their residence halls.
