THE PUBLIC SAFETY REPORT
FEBRUARY 4 11, 2007

The Lake Superior State University Public Safety Department reports the following activity for the period of February 5, 2007 through February 11, 2007:

On February 5, 2007, officers received a report from a student that she had received several threatening messages from an unknown subject while on line. The subject received the threats while conversing with a subject via instant messenger. Due to the fact that a possible suspect in the complaint is not a student, the investigation was turned over to the Sault Sainte Marie Police Department.

On February 7, 2007, officers from the department assisted the grounds crew during the bad weather by shutting down the back hill portion of campus drive. Plow crews were finding it difficult to stay ahead of the falling snow and the hill had become too hazardous to remain open.

While policing a minor traffic accident in L Lot on February 8, 2007, officers observed a vehicle being driven in a reckless manner. The driver of the vehicle was identified and contacted about the violation.

Later that same day, officers from the department observed another individual driving recklessly in C Lot. This time the subject waved at the officers as he was doing donuts in the lot. The driver of the vehicle was again identified and the matter referred to the campus disciplinary process.

At approximately 1929 on Friday, February 9th, the officers were advised of a fire alarm sounding in North Erie Hall. Responding officers discovered smoke in the basement of the building and Sault Fire was requested to respond. While awaiting their arrival, officers evacuated South Erie Hall as a precautionary measure. Responding fire fighters checked both sides of the building and discovered smoke in the basement of South Erie Hall. Both buildings were ventilated. Fire Chief Ken Eagle attributed the smoke to the faulty boiler, which had run out of water.

A student contacted the department in reference to some unwanted phone solicitations she had recently received. Apparently, the automated message leaves a call back number, along with an ID number and asks the receiving person to call the number in response. The department would like to remind students to use a great deal of care and caution when dealing with unsolicited requests for information, be it via the telephone or the internet. If you have any doubts about such requests, do not comply with the request. Never give personal information to anyone unless you are certain who you are dealing with.

RAs in Brady Hall requested assistance with several under-age drinkers in Brady Hall. It appeared that the RAs managed to nip the gathering in the bud before great quantities of the illegal beverages were consumed. Three young ladies were escorted from Brady Hall and sent on their way after being advised against any future infractions of a similar nature. The residents fate was left in the hands of the RAs.

An apparently hungry individual who had accompanied a resident of Moloney Hall back to his apartment from a downtown drinking establishment attempted to cook a pizza at 0230. All she accomplished was activating the smoke detector and drawing the attention of the RA and the Public Safety Department. The occupants of the room were advised to forego any additional attempts at cooking and to quiet down. A short time later, however, officers were called back to Moloney Hall because the same individuals were being loud. Officers remained in the area for several minutes without hearing any noise. It was determined that the disruptive subjects had left the scene just prior to the officers arrival.

Finally, on Sunday, February 11th, the residents of a Townhouse were reported as being too loud. Officers made contact with the individuals and asked them to quiet down, which they were happy to do.

In addition to the above actions, the department handled the following routine duties: 10 motorist assists, 7 weapons storage escorts, 11 lost or found property reports, 43 room admits, and 4 unfounded alarms. We also assisted maintenance 5 times with various problems.

Public Safety Tip of the week: Your identity is the most important thing you own. Guard your personal information with great care. Identity theft may only take a matter of minutes to accomplish but a life time to recover.
