THE PUBLIC SAFETY REPORT

MARCH 21 MARCH 25 2007

The Lake Superior State University Public Safety Department reports the following activity for the period of March 21 through March 25, 2007:

Excessive noise at 2:57 a.m. on Wednesday, March 21 resulted in officers contacting a resident of the Townhouses. The noise, however, had diminished by the time officers arrived. Officers made contact with the resident to make sure there was no repeat of the incident and then cleared the scene.

On Thursday, March 22, at 8:10 a.m., a student reported a small brown Cocker Spaniel roaming the campus. Officers attempted to contact Animal Control but were advised that no one was on duty until 10:00. Officers continued to keep track of the four-footed visitor until he left campus on his own.

Also on Thursday, March 22, officers received a vandalism complaint form a resident of the Student Village. He reported that someone had let the air out of a tire on his vehicle. He believed it may have been done as a prank with the instigators being his roommates.

On Friday, March 23, officers were called to a room in the Student Village at 0148 to investigate a noise complaint. The noise was described as a muffled base line coming through the walls or floor. Officers checked the adjoining residences, the lower levels of the building and outside without being able to locate the source of the sound.

At 9:00 p.m. on Friday, officers investigated another noise complaint in the Student Village. The culprits this time turned out to be residents playing video games. Officers requested that they turn down the volume on their television and close the exterior door to the residence.

Vomit on the outside of a vehicle parked near Brady Hall garnered the attention of PSD officers on Friday, March 23 at 11:53 p.m. Officers made contact with the owner of the vehicle and discovered that he had picked a friend up from a party. The friend had been intoxicated and had thrown up while in route back to campus. Officers checked on the passengers well-being and a Preliminary Breath Test indicated he was not intoxicated enough to be in any danger.

Immediately after clearing the alcohol incident in Brady Hall, officers were sent to Osborn Hall to investigate a report of intoxicated females roaming the halls. Officers and the Resident Assistants searched the building but did not locate the females in question.

Officers on vehicle patrol observed a vehicle parked on the sidewalk near Osborn Hall. When the driver noticed officers approaching the vehicle, he backed his vehicle up at an unsafe speed and almost struck the department vehicle. Officers followed the vehicle as it left campus and obtained the vehicles license plate. Disciplinary action is pending.

At 2:36 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, officers received a request for medical assistance in Osborn Hall. The complainant reported that her neighbor had cut her thumb and needed assistance. When officers arrived, they discovered the victim had cut her thumb with a razor blade while attempting to fix a pool cue. Responding officers determined that the victim needed more attention than they could provide and contacted Sault Fire who transported the victim to War Memorial Hospital where she received stitches.

At 10:14 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, officers received an anonymous report of a group of subjects throwing objects at one of the Townhouses. Officers responded but were unable to locate the disorderly group.

An adventurous driver attempted a little off-road driving on the North hill of campus which ended when the driver got his truck stuck in the ditch along Sheridan Drive. The owner of the vehicle is a non-student, so the vehicle was turned over to Sault P.D.

Finally, on Sunday March 25, at 12:20 a.m., a resident of Osborn Hall reported someone throwing snowballs at the windows. Subjects were gone on arrival.

In addition to the above activity, your Public Safety Department conducted the following routine activities: 2 motorist assists, 22 weapons escorts, 1 lost and found property report, and 20 room admits. Officers also investigated 2 unfounded alarms, 1 vehicle accident, and assisted maintenance 2 times with various problems on campus.

Public Safety Tip of the Week: With the advent of the warm weather, please remember that what melts during the day freezes when the temperatures fall in the evening. The running water from the melting snow is often invisible when it freezes at night, resulting in extremely slippery spots that can catch a walker unaware. Please use caution until the snow is completely gone.
