To whom it may concern:

There is an error in the Sudoku puzzle for the issue of December 15.
For those of us who complete Sudoku puzzles regularly, we recognize the mistake very shortly. Try to place a three anywhere in the medium box of the nine little boxes. One does not even have to attempt to place any other numbers any where on the puzzle. You should have found the mistake by now; if not I will point out exactly where it is. Take the blank upper left little box inside the medium one. You cannot place a three there because there is a three in that column already. The same goes for the boxes below those. Now the right side cannot have any threes either because it also has a three in the column already.
This eliminates all boxes, save one. The very middle box of the puzzle, but this also cannot have a three because there is a three in that row already. I trust you have seen my point on this issue.

I just wanted to inform you of this error.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Sarah,
Thank you for your letter! We found the error early Friday morning, within an hour of the paper arriving on campus. Obviously, at that point it was too late to correct it. Normally we solve the puzzles Wednesday night to verify that they are in fact valid puzzles. Because it was the week before exams, our staff was busy and this got overlooked. Over Christmas break, the puzzles for the rest of the year were completed and we are working on verifying that the puzzles can be solved. Sorry for this inconvenience and keep us updated on your opinion.
