Residents Rent

Do you live on campus and have been wondering where your room and board money has been going? If there is one thing every college student loves more than their mother it is the money they are paying for schooling. Many requests have been made for an article on Housing and as to what and where the money goes.
Talking with Scott Korb, the Director of Residential Life, on where the money is spent he says it goes to many different kinds of projects; from roofs to basements. Mr. Korb likes to think of Lake State as a family, and like any family unless they are fortunate to hit the lottery they cant afford to fix everything at once. So every year they fix the random problems that occur like leaky roofs, troublesome water boilers and any furniture that happens to get broken or ruined.
Many projects do require a certain amount of time; some are more noticeable than others. Examples of noticeable changes that have taken place this year is the new furniture in the Galley, Peacock Cove and residential buildings, the addition of televisions through out campus and the new study area in Brady basement. Things you may not notice are the future plans to re-roof some of the apartment buildings, repainting the rails at Brady Hall and the cycling of mattresses. Students may not know this but every year we try to replace one hundred mattresses on campus to cycle the old out with the new, said Mr. Korb when I asked about summer projects that Housing does each year. There are about a thousand mattresses on campus and every year they pick one hundred of the worst and replace them.
It should be known that Housing does gradual changes and these changes shouldnt be over looked. Next years freshmen will be coming to Lake State thinking what Lake State has gained this year as the norm. Theyll be looking for the things their money is going to just like this years students. Little will they know that the flat screen televisions in the Peacock Cove or the pool tables were new this year; or that the lounges in the resident halls are decked out with new furniture. Its a blessing and a curse to have gradual changes at Lake State, a student may not notice them right away and be anxious as to where the money is going, but when they see the results they will see it is money well spent.
