For those students and community member who arent interested in sports, theres finally something else to do on the weekend! Side Door Saturday Night has actually been around for about a year, the first evening was hosted in January, 2006.
Side Door Saturday Night generally consists of poetry, music and short works of fiction being read and performed. The mic is open to anyone interested, though they do try to stick to a program that consists of one musical group and two poets. Each event brings in around 20 audience members, which, according to event organizer Jillena Rose, is really kind of astounding for that kind of event up here.
They try to hold two Side Door Saturday Nights each semester, but right now, theyre only meeting once, due to competing events. The next Night will be held March 17, in an off-campus location, in conjunction with Diversity Week.
Original work is preferred, but for Diversity Week, pieces can be published. These Nights are always free and coffee and cookies are offered as refreshments. The Side Door Saturday Nights have begun to collaborate with Bayliss Library for Superior Poetry Night in a joint effort to have published poets come up and read their works. The goal, again, is for two of these nights per semester. For information on performing at a Side Door Saturday Night, contact Jillena Rose at 906-635-2228.
