2006-2007 Student Government Officers
By: Elizabeth Sippl

Student Government is probably the most influential student organization on campus and the one that is least understood by the students it represents. In order to clear up some of the confusion, heres a back-to-school Student Government primer.
Hilary Kozma is this years president. In the past she served as a representative and as Secretary of Student Services and Concerns. Some of the functions of the president include serving as the representative of the student body to the administration; serving as the chair for general assembly meetings; serving as the student body representative at Board of Trustees meetings and handling everyday Student Government events.
Amanda Burmeister is the Secretary of Political Action and University Development (PAUD). The PAUD secretary handles legislative issues, such as lobbying in support of Higher Ed in Lansing and represents LSSU at the Association of Michigan Universities, again lobbying for statewide student issues.
The Discretionary Funding Committee (DFC) is headed by Emory Nelkie. DFC allocates money from the Student Activity and Media Fee to six of the seven big organizations on campus. Those organizations are the Compass, WLSO, IGC, Activities Board, Presidents Council and Judiciary Board. The seventh organization, the one that does not receive funding, is Student Government.
Heather Youtzy is the Secretary of Activities and Public Relations and she is in charge of getting Student Governments name out to students as well as organizing events such as the Searchmont Ski Night and the Snowman Burning.
Brandon Zajac is the Secretary of Student Services and Concerns. He handles student issues, bringing them before the proper channels to resolve them. He is already active this year, working to address the issues brought forth by the fliers found on campus a few weeks ago.
In addition to these members of the Executive Board, there is also an Operational Manager, who is responsible for taking minutes and keeping an accurate budget and 12 general assembly representatives who are voted into Student Government each year.
