The Lake Superior State University Board of Trustees met at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 19, 2007. Early in the meeting, during the Address to the Board, Brandon Zajac, the Secretary of Student Services/Concerns stepped up with two major concerns. His first concern was about the idea to put official police officers on campus. Brandon proposed the idea that Bill Whitman, the man behind the idea, puts out a business model of the plan, so the students can see for themselves exactly what it would be like. Brandon also offered several alternatives, including training our current Public Safety Officers to deal better with what the police officers would be needed for. Brandons second concern was the firing of tenure professor Dr. Eric Gadzinski. The Board discussed the police on campus later in the meeting, but did not mention Dr. Gadzinski at all during the rest of the meeting.

Dr. Youngblood briefly discussed many topics, including the Police on campus, saying that it was only an exploratory study, and that there was no set timetable. She discussed different student groups being able to travel through out the country, including the Black Box Theater group visiting San Antonio, TX. She then introduced the new Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Ken Peress. Dr. Peress discussed his plans to get out and meet the students, and to get to know what is going on in the University. He plans to get students more involved with learning, and create more activities to help them get more involved in the University.

A motion was passed to create a new Bachelor of Education program. This program would make it so that students looking for Bachelors in Education would not have to graduate before completing their student teaching requirement. They will do the student teaching while still enrolled as an undergraduate in college, thus giving them more opportunities for financial aid. More information on this will be available at a later date.

Three professors were granted sabbatical leave; Professor Lewis Brown, of the Geology Department is leaving for two semesters, Assistant Professor Linda Schmitigal of the Business Department, is leaving for the spring of 2008 semester, and Professor MaryAnne Shannon of the Nursing Department is also leaving for the spring of 2008 semester.

Finally, Mr. Bill Whitman discussed the possibility of getting police officers on Campus. Mr. Whitman assured the Board that the plan was still in an information gathering phase. He has already met with Student Government, and Presidents Council, and explained his plans to them. Mr. Whitman says that police on campus will give opportunity to provide a more professional service to the university.

The Board of Trustees holds public meetings every month. Their next meeting will be March 9 in the Cisler Center.
