Student Government held their weekly meeting on February 14, 2007. After being called to order, Chief Justice Doug Anger swore in Student Governments newest representative, Luke Allen. After roll call and approval of minutes, President Kozma gave her report. She thanked Rep. John Petkus for his time served on SG. Rep. Petkus spoke, saying that he was resigning his position but that being on Student Government was a great learning experience, so this was a difficult decision. After Petkus stepped down, Kozma finished her report, reminding the body that diversity week is approaching and they are still looking for events. If any club or organization is interested in hosting an event, they should speak to Cheryl Brooks, the cultural diversity officer. Brooks can be reached at cabrooks@lssu.edu.

The meeting moved on to committee reports, beginning with the Committee of Student Concerns and Services. Brandon Zajac, chair of the committee, received fourteen concerns from students and is working on five of them; the rest have been resolved.

Activities and Public Relations Chair Heather Youtzy, thanked everyone for their help with Searchmont, which was a great success despite the weather. She reminded everyone that Snowman Burning is March 20 at noon and the Leadership Awards are April 10.

Amanda Burmeister, Chair of Political Action and University Development, spoke briefly about Resolution 207-07, which she was introducing later in the meeting. Discretionary Funding chair Emory Nelkie told the body that he would be holding an information forum with the Big 7, to go over budgets with them.

There was no unfinished business and the only piece of new business was Resolution 2007-07, requesting funding for a lobbying trip to Lansing with NMU and Michigan Tech. Rep. Burmeister spoke of the need for LSSU to make an impact in Lansing and that some legislators are unaware of where Lake State even is. After some debate as to whether lobbying is effective or not, Dr. Peress added, If we dont do it, Lake State will get left out. Go there and impress the hell out of them! When brought to a roll call vote, the resolution passed 11-1-2. In closing, President Kozma reminded the body that there is still one student representative spot available for anyone wishing to join Student Government.
