Project Description

     

This summer I decided to do research in Biometrics and began to design a fingerprint classification and recognition program using java. My goal is for this system to be faster than current systems by applying certain areas of mathematics to fingerprint classification and recognition.

  • Week 1: I met with Dr. Fiorini and was introduced to multiple problems in mathematics.  
    •        
  • Week 2: We decided to explore finite geometries and axiomatic systems to see if we could design our own axioms that could be used as useful theorems. Also I gave my first presentation.

  • Week 3: Dr. Firorini introduced me to more problems in mathematics and this where I was introduced to his crime packet that he created. This packet was dealing with mathematics and biometrics, he came up with an idea of how to bring a mathematical element to fingerprint classification and recognition. I immediately became interested in finding out more about biometrics and what current systems of classification and recognition were being used today.

  • Week 4: I did some research about fingerprints learning about how they were used from ancient times until modern day usage. After reading a few articles about the lack of mathematical analysis in fingerprint recognition, I decided to begin to designing a program that would bring mathematics and biometrics together using Dr. Fiorini's idea's from his crime packet.

  • Week 5: I started to think about different ways I classify , and began to construct my GUI (Graphic User Interface).
  • Week 6: I continued to work on my program, while researching how other fingerprint classification systems function so that I could make sure that the cocepts of my system were original.
  • Week 7: Prepared my final presentation.
  • Week 8: During my final presentation I extended an offer for anyone in REU 2011 who had an intrest in programming to join me in continuing to work on this classification and recognition program and Josh Zukoff was inetrested. We will be using www.gethub.com to add and make changes to the program.
